Dale City was the brain child of Cecil Don Hylton, a real estate developer who had begun his working life selling produce at farmers' markets and later ran a sod business. During the post-war housing boom Hylton began to work in home building and started his own sewer company and one of the first cable television companies in the area. Hylton was always a man with a plan. The community was named after the rolling hills and dales of region by Hylton himself. Hylton Enterprises developed the area and it is nearly complete and several sites in the community are named for its founder, including C.D. Hylton High School. In recent years, Hylton's legacy continued through the works of the Hylton Foundation, such as underwriting a beautiful major addition to the nearby Potomac Hospital.
